Jeremiah 3

 The Defiled Land

1God [a]says, “If a husband divorces his wife

And she leaves him

And becomes another man’s wife,

Will he return to her again

Would that land not be completely defiled

But you are a prostitute with many [b]lovers

Yet you turn to Me,” declares the LORD.

2“Raise your eyes to the bare heights and see

Where have you not been violated

You have sat for them by the roads

Like an Arab in the desert

And you have defiled a land

With your prostitution and your wickedness.

3“Therefore the showers have been withheld

And there has been no spring rain

Yet you had a prostitute’s [c]forehead

You refused to be ashamed.

4“Have you not just now called to Me,

‘My Father, You are the friend of my youth?

5‘Will He be angry forever

Or keep His anger to the end?’

Behold, you have spoken

And have done evil things

And you have [d]had your own way.”

Faithless Israel

6Then the LORD said to me in the days of King Josiah, “Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She went up on every high hill and under every leafy tree, and she prostituted herself there7Yet I [e]thought, ‘After she has done all these things she will return to Me’; but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8And I saw that for all the [f]adulteries of faithless Israel, I had senther away and given her a certificate of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and prostituted herself also9And because of the thoughtlessness of her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed [g]adultery with stones and trees.10Yet in spite of all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in deception,” declares the LORD.

God Invites Repentance

11And the LORD said to me, “Faithless Israel has proved herself to be more righteous than treacherous Judah12Go and proclaimthese words toward the north and say

‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the LORD

‘I will not [h]look at you in anger

For I am gracious,’ declares the LORD

‘I will not be angry forever.

13‘Only [i]acknowledge your wrongdoing

That you have revolted against the LORD your God

And have scattered your [j]favors to the strangers under every leafy tree

And you have not obeyed My voice,’ declares the LORD.

14‘Return, you faithless sons,’ declares the LORD

‘For I am a master to you,

And I will take you, one from a city and two from a family

And bring you to Zion.’

15Then I will give you shepherds [k]after My own heart, who will feed you knowledge and understanding. 16And it shall be in thosedays when you become numerous and are fruitful in the land,” declares the LORD, “they will no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’ And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor miss it, nor will it be made again17At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The Throne of the LORD,’ and all the nations will assemble at it, at Jerusalem, for the name of the LORD; and they will no longer follow the stubbornness of their evil heart18In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers as an inheritance.

19“Then I said

‘How I would set you among [l]My sons

And give you a pleasant land

The most beautiful inheritance of the nations!’

And I said, ‘You shall call Me, My Father

And not turn away from following Me.’

20“Howeveras a woman treacherously leaves her lover

So you have dealt treacherously with Me,

House of Israel,” declares the LORD.

21A voice is heard on the bare heights

The weeping, the pleading of the sons of Israel

Because they have perverted their way

They have forgotten the LORD their God.

22“Return, you faithless sons

I will heal your faithlessness.”

“Behold, we come to You;

For You are the LORD our God.

23“Certainly the hills are a deception

[m]Commotion on the mountains

Certainly in the LORD our God

Is the salvation of Israel.

24“But the shame has consumed the product of our fathers’ labor since our youth—their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters25Let us lie down in our shame, and let our humiliation cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.”

EZEKIEL 37

Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones

1The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out [a]by the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones2He had me pass among them all around, and beholdthere were very many on the surface of the valley; and beholdthey were very dry3Then He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “Lord [b]GOD, You Yourselfknow.” 4Again He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones and say to them, ‘You dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.’ 5This is whatthe Lord GOD says to these bones: ‘Behold, I am going to make [c]breath enter you so that you may come to life6And I will [d]attachtendons to you, make flesh grow back on you, cover you with skin, and put breath in you so that you may come to life; and you will know that I am the LORD.’”

7So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a loud noise, and behold, a [e]rattling; and the bones cametogether, bone to its bone8And I looked, and behold, tendons were on them, and flesh grew and skin covered them; but there was nobreath in them. 9Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘The Lord GOD says this: “Come from the four winds, breath, and breathe on these slain, so that they come to life.”’” 10So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

The Vision Explained

11Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the entire house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hopehas perished. We are [f]completely cut off.’ 12Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I am going to open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, My people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel13Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people14And I will put My [g]Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken and done it,” declares the LORD.’”

Reunion of Judah and Israel

15The word of the LORD came again to me, saying16“Now you, son of man, take for yourself one stick and write on it, ‘For Judah and for the sons of Israel, his companions’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel, his companions.’ 17Then put them together for yourself one to another into one stick, so that they may become one in your hand. 18And when the sons of your people speak to you, saying, ‘Will you not declare to us what [h]you mean by these?’ 19say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I am going to take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribesof Israel, his companions; and I will put them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they will be one in My hand.”’ 20The sticks on which you write will be in your hand before their eyes21And say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I am going to take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every sideand bring them into their own land; 22and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king will be king for all of them; and they will no longer be two nations, and no longer be divided into two kingdoms23They will no longer defile themselves with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their offenses; but I will rescue them from all their [i]dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God.

The Davidic Kingdom

24“And My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ordinances, and keep My statutes and [j]follow them. 25And they will live on the land that I gave to My servant Jacob, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they, and their sons and their sons’ sons, forever; and My servant David will be their leader forever. 26And I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will [k]place them and multiply them, and set My sanctuary in their midst forever. 27My dwelling place also will be among them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people.28And the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.”’”
