613 Torah Laws

Below are the 613 general Laws and Statutes within Torah universally used by all Torah followers.  I have inserted the scriptures listed for each.  I am not quite done with all the scriptures but will update as I get them done.  I am currently writing out each of them by hand for my own personal learning.  



GOD

1.To know that God exists (Ex. 20:2; Deut. 5:6)

Ex 20:2“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

2.Not to entertain the idea that there is any god but the Eternal (Ex. 20:3)

“You shall have no other gods before Me.


3.Not to blaspheme (Ex. 22:28 ) Cf Lev 24:16

Ex 22:28 You shall not curse God, nor curse a ruler of your people.


Lev 24:16 Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The stranger as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.


4.To hallow God's name (Lev. 22:32)

“And you shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel; I am the LORD who sanctifies you,

9.Not to put the word of God to the test (Deut. 6:16) 

“You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.


10.To imitate His good and upright ways (Deut. 28:9)

Deut 28:9 The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. 


The Law

11.To honor the old and the wise (Lev. 19:32)

‘You shall stand up in the presence of the grayheaded and honor elders, and you shall fear your God; I am the LORD


12.To learn Torah and to teach it (Deut. 6:7)

And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.


13.To cleave to those who know Him (Deut. 10:20)

You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him, and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name.


14.Not to add to the commandments of the Torah.(Deut.13:1)

If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder,

16.That every person shall write a scroll of the Torah for himself (Deut. 31:19)SIGNS AND SYMBOLS

17.To circumcise the male offspring (Gen. 17:12; Lev. 12:3) 

Gen 17:12 And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, including a slave who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.

Lev 12:3 Then on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.


18.To put fringes on the corners of clothing (Num. 15:38) 

“Speak to the sons of Israel and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a violet thread.


19.To bind God's Word on the head (Deut. 6:8)

You shall also tie them as a sign to your hand, and they shall be as frontlets on your forehead.

21.To affix the mezuzah to the door posts and gates of your house (Deut. 6:9)

Prayer and Blessing

22.To pray to God (Ex. 23:25; Deut. 6:13)

You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name. 


23.To read the Shema [lit:The Hearing] in the morning and at night (Deut. 6:7)

And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.


24.To recite grace after meals (Deut. 8:10)

When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.


25.Not to lay down a stone for worship (Lev. 26:1)

‘You shall not make for yourselves idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves a carved image or a memorial stone, nor shall you place a figured stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am the LORD your God. 


Love and Brotherhood

26.To love all human beings who are of the covenant (Lev. 19:18) 

You shall not take vengeance, nor hold any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.


27.Not to stand by idly when a human life is in danger (Lev. 19:16) 

You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people; and you are not to jeopardize the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD.


28.Not to wrong any one in speech (Lev. 25:17)

So you shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.


29.Not to carry tales (Lev. 19:16)

You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people; and you are not to jeopardize the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD.


30.Not to cherish hatred in one's heart (Lev. 19:17)

‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may certainly rebuke your neighbor, but you are not to incur sin because of him.

31.Not to take revenge (Lev. 19:18)

You shall not take vengeance, nor hold any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.


32.Not to bear a grudge (Lev. 19:18)

33.Not to put any Jew to shame (Lev. 19:17)

‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may certainly rebuke your neighbor, but you are not to incur sin because of him.



34.Not to curse any other Israelite (Lev. 19:14)

You shall not curse a person who is deaf, nor put a stumbling block before a person who is blind, but you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.


35.Not to give occasion to the simple-minded to stumble on the road (Lev.

19:14)

36.To rebuke the sinner (Lev. 19:17)

‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may certainly rebuke your neighbor, but you are not to incur sin because of him.


37.To relieve a neighbor of his burden and help to unload his beast (Ex. 23:5)

If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying helpless under its load, you shall not leave it helpless for its owner; you must arrange the load with him.


38.To assist in replacing the load upon a neighbor's beast (Deut.22:4)

You shall not see your countryman’s donkey or his ox fallen down on the road, and avoid them; you shall certainly help him raise them up.


39.Not to leave a beast, that has fallen down beneath its burden, unaided (Deut. 22:4)

The Poor and Unfortunate

40.Not to afflict an orphan or a widow (Ex. 22:21)

Lev 19:9 Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.

Lev 23:22 ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, moreover, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the stranger. I am the LORD your God.’”


42.To leave the unreaped corners of the field or orchard for the poor (Lev. 19:9)

Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.


43.Not to gather gleanings (the ears that have fallen to the ground while reaping)

(Lev. 19:9)

44.To leave the gleanings for the poor (Lev. 19:9)

45.Not to gather ol'loth (the imperfect clusters) of the vineyard (Lev. 19:10)

46.To leave ol'loth (the imperfect clusters) of the vineyard for the poor (Lev. 19:10; Deut. 24:21)

Lev  19:10 ”And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.

Deut 24:21 “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you are not to go over it again; that shall be left for the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. 


47.Not to gather the single grapes that have fallen to the ground (Lev. 19:10)

”And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.


48.To leave the single grapes of the vineyard for the poor (Lev. 19:10)

49.Not to return to take a forgotten sheaf (Deut. 24:19) 

“When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you are not to go back to get it; it shall belong to the stranger, the orphan, and to the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 

This applies to all fruit trees (Deut. 24:20)

When you beat the olives off your olive tree, you are not to search through the branches again; that shall be left for the stranger, the orphan, and for the widow.


50.To leave the forgotten sheaves for the poor (Deut. 24:19-20)

51.Not to refrain from maintaining a poor man and giving him what he needs (Deut. 15:7)

“If there is a poor person among you, one of your brothers, in any of your towns in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother; 


52.To give charity according to one's means (Deut. 15:11)

For the poor will not cease to exist in the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying, ‘You shall fully open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’


Treatment of the Gentiles

53.To love the stranger (Deut. 10:19) (CCA61). 

So show your love for the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.


54.Not to wrong the stranger in speech (Ex. 22:20)

“But if this charge is true, and they did not find the girl to have evidence of virginity,

55.Not to wrong the stranger in buying or selling (Ex. 22:20).

56.Not to intermarry with gentiles (Deut. 7:3)

Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons.


57.To exact the debt of an alien (Deut. 15:3) 

From a foreigner you may require it, but your hand shall forgive whatever of yours is with your brother.


58.To lend to an alien at interest (Deut. 23:21)

“When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly require it of you, and it will be a sin for you.


Marriage, Divorce and Family

59.To honor father and mother (Ex. 20:12)

However, if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it.


60.Not to smite a father or a mother (Ex. 21:15)

“If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him sons, and the firstborn son belongs to the unloved, 


61.Not to curse a father or mother (Ex. 21:17)

On the contrary, he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved wife, by giving him a double portion of everything that he owns, for he was the beginning of his strength; to him belongs the right of the firstborn.


62.To reverently fear father and mother (Lev. 19:3)

You shall prepare the roads for yourself, and divide into three regions the territory of your land which the LORD your God will give you as an inheritance, so that anyone who commits manslaughter may flee there.


63.To be fruitful and multiply (Gen. 1:28)

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”


64.That a eunuch shall not marry a daughter of Israel (Deut. 23:2)

But the LORD said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him and all his people and his land over to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’


65.That a bastard [Heb.mamzer = illegitimate son] shall not marry the daughter of a Jew (Deut.23:3)

No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the LORD; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the assembly of the LORD,


66.That an Ammonite or Moabite shall never marry the daughter of an Israelite (Deut. 23:4)

because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 


67.Not to exclude a descendant of Esau from the community of Israel for three generations (Deut. 23:8-9)

The sons of the third generation who are born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.

“When you go out as an army against your enemies, you shall be on guard against every evil thing.


68.Not to exclude an Egyptian from the community of Israel for three generations (Deut. 23:8-9)

69.That there shall be no harlot (in Israel); that is, that there shall be no intercourse with a woman, without previous marriage with a deed of marriage and formal declaration of marriage (Deut.23:18)

You shall not bring the earnings of a prostitute or the money for a dog into the house of the LORD your God as payment for any vowed offering, because both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God.


70.To take a wife by the sacrament of marriage (Deut.24:1)

“When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens, if she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, that he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her away from his house,


71.That the newly married husband shall (be free) for one year to rejoice with his wife (Deut. 24:5)

“When a man takes a new wife, he is not to go out with the army, nor be assigned any duty; he shall be free at home for one year and shall make his wife whom he has taken happy.


72.That a bridegroom shall be exempt for a whole year from taking part in

any public labor, such as military service, guarding the wall and similar duties (Deut. 24:5)

73.Not to withhold food, clothing or conjugal rights from a wife (Ex. 21:10)

If he takes to himself another woman, he may not reduce her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights.


74.That the woman suspected of adultery shall be dealt with as prescribed in the Torah (Num. 5:30)

or when an attitude of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife, he shall then have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest shall apply all of this law to her. 


75.That one who defames his wife's honor (by falsely accusing her of unchastity before marriage) must live with her all his lifetime (Deut. 22:19)

and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give it to the girl’s father, because he publicly defamed a virgin of Israel. And she shall remain his wife; he is not allowed to divorce her all his days.


76.That a man may not divorce his wife concerning whom he has published an evil report (about her unchastity before marriage) (Deut. 22:19)

77.To divorce by a formal written document (Deut. 24:1)

79.That a widow whose husband died childless must not be married to anyone but her deceased husband's brother (Deut. 25:5) (this is only in effect insofar as it requires the procedure of release below).

“When brothers live together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall have relations with her and take her to himself as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.


80.To marry the widow of a brother who has died childless (Deut.25:5) (this is only in effect insofar as it requires the procedure of release below )

81.That the widow formally release the brother-in-law (if he refuses to marry her) (Deut. 25:7-9)

But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s widow, then his brother’s widow shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, ‘I do not desire to take her,’ 9then his brother’s widow shall come up to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, ‘This is what is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house!’


Forbidden Sexual Relations

82.Not to indulge in familiarities with relatives, such as sensual kissing, carnal embracing, or provocative winking which may lead to

incest (Lev.18:6)

‘None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am the LORD. 


83.Not to commit incest with one's mother (Lev. 18:7)

You shall not (incest)uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness.


84.Not to commit sodomy with one's father (Lev. 18:7)

You shall not (incest)uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness.


85.Not to commit incest with one's father's wife (Lev. 18:8)

You shall not uncover the (incest) nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness.


86.Not to commit incest with one's sister (Lev. 18:9)

As for the (incest) nakedness of your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born in the household or born outside the household, you shall not uncover their nakedness. 


87.Not to commit incest with one's father's wife's daughter (Lev.18:9)

As for the nakedness of your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born in the household or born outside the household, you shall not uncover their nakedness. 


88.Not to commit incest with one's son's daughter (Lev. 18:10)

The (incest) nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for their nakedness is yours.


89.Not to commit incest with one's daughter's daughter (Lev.18:10)

The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for their nakedness is yours.


90.Not to commit incest with one's daughter (this is not explicitly in the Torah but is inferred from other explicit commands that would include it) Lev 18:11

The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, born to your father, she is your sister; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 


91.Not to commit incest with one's fathers sister (Lev. 18:12)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s blood relative.


92.Not to commit incest with one's mother's sister (Lev. 18:13)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s blood relative.


93.Not to commit incest with one's father's brothers wife (Lev.18:14)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 


94.Not to commit sodomy with one's father's brother (Lev. 18:14)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 


95.Not to commit incest with one's son's wife (Lev. 18:15)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness.


96.Not to commit incest with one's brother's wife (Lev. 18:16)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.


97.Not to commit incest with one's wife's daughter (Lev. 18:17)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and of her daughter, nor shall you take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are blood relatives. It is an outrageous sin.


98.Not to commit incest with the daughter of one's wife's son (Lev.18:17)

You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and of her daughter, nor shall you take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are blood relatives. It is an outrageous sin.


99.Not to commit incest with the daughter of one's wife's daughter (Lev. 18:17)

100.Not to commit incest with one's wife's sister (Lev. 18:18)

And you shall not marry a woman in addition to her sister as a second wife while she is alive, to uncover her nakedness.


101.Not to have intercourse with a woman, in her menstrual period (Lev. 18:19)

‘Also you shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness during her menstrual impurity. 

102.Not to have intercourse with another man's wife (Lev. 18:20)

And you shall not have sexual intercourse with your neighbor’s wife, to be defiled with her. 21You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

103.Not to commit sodomy with a male (Lev. 18:22)

You shall not sleep with a male as one sleeps with a female; it is an abomination. 

104.Not to have intercourse with a beast (Lev. 18:23)

Also you shall not have sexual intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.


105.That a woman shall not have intercourse with a beast (Lev.18:23)

106.Not to castrate the male of any species; neither a man, nor a domestic or wild beast, nor a fowl (Lev. 22:24)

You shall not sleep with a male as one sleeps with a female; it is an abomination. 23Also you shall not have sexual intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.

24‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these things the nations which I am driving out from you have become defiled.


Times and Seasons

107.That the new month shall be solemnly proclaimed as holy, and the months and years shall be calculated by the Supreme Court only (Ex. 12:2)

108.Not to travel on the Sabbath outside the limits of one's place of residence

(Ex. 16:29)

See, the LORD has given you the Sabbath; for that reason He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain, everyone, in his place; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.” 


109.To sanctify the Sabbath (Ex. 20:8)

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.


110.Not to do work on Sabbath (Ex. 20:10)

but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male slave or your female slave, or your cattle, or your resident who stays with you. 


111.To rest on Sabbath (Ex. 23:12; 34:21)

“For six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, as well as the stranger residing with you, may refresh themselves. 

34:21 “You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest.


112.To celebrate the festivals (Ex.23:14)

“Three times a year you shall celebrate a feast to Me.


113.To rejoice on the festivals (Deut. 16:14)

and you shall rejoice in your feast, you, your son and your daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are in your towns.


114.To appear in the Sanctuary on the festivals (Deut. 16:16)

3“And if a woman makes a vow to the LORD, and puts herself under a binding obligation in her father’s house in her youth, 4and her father hears her vow and her obligation under which she has put herself, and her father [c]says nothing to her, then all her vows shall [d]remain valid and every binding obligation under which she has put herself shall [e]remain valid. 5But if her father expresses disapproval to her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or her obligations under which she has put herself shall remain valid; and the LORD will [f]forgive her because her father has expressed disapproval to her.

6“However, if she happens to [g]marry while [h]under her vows or the impulsive statement of her lips by which she has obligated herself, 7and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her on the day he hears it, then her vows shall remain valid and her binding obligations under which she has put herself shall remain valid. 8But if on the day her husband hears of it, he expresses disapproval to her, then he will annul her vow which [i]she is under and the impulsive statement of her lips by which she has obligated herself; and the LORD will [j]forgive her.

9“But as for the vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, every binding obligation under which she has put herself, shall remain valid against her. 10However, if a married woman vowed in her husband’s house, or put herself under a binding obligation with an oath, 11and her husband heard it, but said nothing to her and did not express disapproval to her, then all her vows shall remain valid and every binding obligation under which she put herself shall remain valid. 12But if her husband actually annuls them on the day he hears them, then no utterance from her lips concerning her vows or the obligation she put on herself shall remain valid; her husband has annulled them, and the LORD will [k]forgive her.

13“Every vow and every binding oath to humble herself, her husband may confirm it or her husband may annul it. 14But if her husband in fact says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or all her binding obligations which are on her; he has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard them. 15However, if he actually annuls them [l]after he has heard them, then he shall bear the responsibility for her guilt.”

16These are the statutes which the LORD commanded Moses concerning matters between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter while she is in her youth in her father’s house.

26‘Then on the fifth day: nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 27and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 28and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29‘Then on the sixth day: eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 30and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 31and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offerings.

576.That the waters of separation defile one who is clean, and cleanse the unclean from pollution by a dead body (Num.19:19-22)

Lepers and Leprosy

577.Not to drove off the hair of the scall (Lev. 13:33)

The King

Nazarites

588.That a Nazarite shall not drink wine, or anything mixed with wine which tastes like wine; and even if the wine or the mixture has turned sour, it is prohibited to him (Num. 6:3)

Wars

598.That those engaged in warfare shall not fear their enemies nor be panic-stricken by them during battle (Deut. 3:22, 7:21,20:3)
